Josephine und ich kaufen gegenüber bei Gelson‘s unser Frühstück ein. Früchtebecher, Trinkjoghurt, Brötchen, Käse, kleine Tomaten, Baby Möhren. Auf dem Rückweg kommen wir nicht mehr durch die Tür hinein ins Treppenhaus, aus dem wir rausgekommen sind. Nebenan sind Büros, die noch nicht geöffnet haben. Wir laufen zur Tiefgarage und finden einen Fahrstuhl, der uns nach oben bringt. dann müssen wir nochmal erst durch ein anderen Gebäudeteil laufen, bis wir wieder richtig sind. Ein kleine Odyssee am Morgen!
Anja und Sebastian haben uns den Tipp gegeben, dass wir unsere Kühlbox, den Campingkocher und den Topf bei der Salvation Army Spenden können. Das liegt auch so ungefähr auf dem Weg Richtung Hollywood, in Santa Monica. Wir fahren auf den Hinterhof und können die Sachen abgeben. Super, das freut besonders Julia. Man sieht übrigens überall Obdachlose, ob unter Brücken am Highway oder direkt vor der Tiefgarage des Wohngebäudekomplexes, in dem wir untergebracht sind.
Nächster Stopp sind zwei Serien-Locations. Josephine hat die Adressen der Häuser aus der Serie „Modern Family“ rausgesucht, die auf dem Weg liegen, zuerst besuchen wir das Haus der Familie Dunphy und dann von Mitch und Cam. Schon lustig, vor den Gebäuden zu stehen, in denen irgendwer wohnt, in dieser schönen, ruhigen Wohngegend. Wir machen Fotos und fahren weiter zum Walk of Fame nach Hollywood. Dort herrscht Betrieb auf dem Bürgersteig, der gepflastert ist mit den berühmten Namen auf den Sternen. Vor dem TLC schauen wir auf die Hand- und Fußabdrücke von Jack Nicholson, Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Radcliffe, Mel Brooks und vielen mehr. Wir schauen uns im Souvenirladen um und sehen den Hollywood-Schriftzug in einiger Entfernung von Dolby Theatre aus, das zugleich auch Restaurants beherbergt. Wir setzen uns bei „Johnny Rockets – The Original Hamburger“ rein, einem Diner im 50er Jahre Stil. Cheese Fries, Burger und Grilled Sandwiches essen wir hier und zum Abschluss noch zwei Milchshakes zum Teilen. Die Bedienung bringt sogar noch zwei silberne Becher, in denen noch mehr Milchshake-Eis gratis zum Auslöffeln drin ist.
Das Griffith Observatory liegt am Berg oberhalb der Stadt, dort fahren wir hinauf. Hier oben ist ganz schön viel los, viele Autos und wir müssen uns etwas gedulden, bis wir eine; Parkplatz finden. Vom Observatorium hat man einen Panoramablick auf die riesige Stadt und auch auf das Hollywood Zeichen. Es ist auch nicht diesig, so dass man eine gute Sicht hat. Im Griffith Observatory sind mehrere frei zugängliche Ausstellungen, wir schauen uns eine über das Weltall an. Es ist Nachmittag geworden und wir wollen wieder quer durch die Stadt bis zum Venice Beach in der Nähe unserer Wohnung. Dazu braucht man in L.A. Geduld – und Zeit. Nach fasst 90 Minuten im Auto haben wir die 20 Meilen bewältigt. Belohnt werden wir mit Nachmittagssonne am Venice Beach. Wir parken direkt am Strand, und laufen zum ein paar Schritte zum Pazifik. Erik, Hannes und Julia stürzen sich in die Wellen, die ganz schön hoch sind. Das Wasser ist nicht kalt und die Jungs haben einen Riesenspaß, von den Wellen getroffen zu werden, sie können nicht genug davon bekommen. Josephine sammelt Muscheln, die sie mitnimmt.
Wir laufen die Strandpromenade hoch Richtung Santa Monica. Neben dem Souvenirladen schauen wir noch fasziniert bei den Skatern zu, die im Abendlicht unter Palmen auf einer großen Anlage ihre Tricks vorführen. Jeweils ein Erdbeer-Slushi für Hannes und Erik und ein Oreo-Milchshake für Josephine für den Rückweg, der nur ein paar Minuten dauert. Im Gebäude angekommen, wollen wir alle nochmal den sagenhaften Pool nutzen, wir schwimmen also erst nochmal, die Kinder auch auf dem Rücken, bevor wir ein letztes Mal einkaufen. Angel Hair Spaghetti und Tomatensoße essen wir heute Abend, dann packen wir unsere Taschen und Koffer. Morgen früh um sechs Uhr geht‘s zum Flughafen und zurück nach Hause.
Hollywood & Venice Beach
Josephine and I shop across the street at Gelson’s for our breakfast. Fruit cups, drinking yogurt, rolls, cheese, small tomatoes, baby carrots. On the way back, we can’t get through the door into the stairwell we came out of. Next door are offices that are still closed. We walk to the underground parking and find an elevator that takes us upstairs. Then we have to walk through another part of the building until we get back to the right place. A little odyssey in the morning!
Anja and Sebastian gave us the tip that we can donate our cooler, camping stove and pot at the Salvation Army. This is also about on the way to Hollywood, in Santa Monica. We drive to the backyard and can drop off the stuff. Great, that makes Julia especially happy. By the way, you can see homeless people everywhere, whether under bridges on the highway or right in front of the underground parking garage of the apartment complex where we are staying.
Next stop are two serial locations. Josephine has picked out the addresses of the houses from the series „Modern Family“ that are on the way, first we visit the house of the Dunphy family and then of Mitch and Cam. It’s funny to stand in front of the buildings where anyone lives, in this nice, quiet residential area. We take pictures and continue on to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We eat cheese fries, burgers and grilled sandwiches here and finish off with two milkshakes to share. The Griffith Observatory is located on the mountain above the city, we drive up there. Up here is quite busy, many cars and we have to be patient until we find a; parking lot. It has become afternoon and we want to cross the city again to Venice Beach near our apartment. In L.A. you need patience – and time. After about 90 minutes in the car we have covered the 20 miles. We are rewarded with afternoon sun at Venice Beach. We park directly at the beach and walk a few steps to the Pacific Ocean. Erik, Hannes and Julia jump into the waves, which are quite high. The water is not cold and the boys have a blast getting hit by the waves, they can’t get enough of it. Josephine collects shells to take with her.
We walk up the boardwalk towards Santa Monica. Next to the souvenir store, we watch fascinated at the skaters, who perform their tricks in the evening light under palm trees on a large layout. A strawberry slushi each for Hannes and Erik and an Oreo milkshake for Josephine for the way back, which only takes a few minutes. Once in the building, we all want to use the fabulous pool again, so we swim again first, the kids also on our backs, before shopping one last time.
